The human family is like the human body, if one limb is hurt, we say that we are in pain. Whatever affects one part of humanity inevitably affects all. Race Unity Day is typically observed worldwide by Bahá’ís and others with meetings and discussions. The day was established in 1957 by the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of the United States, with the purpose of focusing attention on racial prejudice. There is a long history of Bahá’ís working towards racial harmony. In 1912, `Abdu’l-Bahá, the leader of the Faith, successor to the Faith’s Founder Bahá‘u’lláh, presented at the Fourth Annual Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) during His visit to America. He encouraged the development of conferences for Racial Unity and Race Amity. In May 1921, the Bahá’í ‘Race Amity’ movement was launched in the nation’s capital, Washington DC, as ‘a practical effort to influence public discourse on race in the United States’. This movement was distinct in that it focused primarily on eradicating the root causes of racial injustice. Bahá’ís see racism as a major barrier to peace, and teach that there must be universal recognition of the oneness of all humans to achieve peace.

In 2022 our Race Unity Day has been expanded to be part of a series of Global Conferences called for by the Universal House of Justice, the chief governing council of the Bahá’í Faith. The goal is to launch a new series of endeavors calling all people of good-will to join together in building a new society. Our theme for today focuses on ‘Social transformation’. The Race Amity Panel will explore the power of education in replacing race angst with race amity as an engine for social transformation; how the distance traveled thus far informs our path forward.
